Teenage Dream Remix #1

Producer

Teenage Dream Remix #1 is an audio/visual art installation utilizing synchronized color and video footage set to my 27-minute remix of Katy Perry’s 2010 hit single Teenage Dream. The song is one of my favorite songs of all time, so I wanted to create something that both celebrated and expanded upon it. My favorite aspect of all great pop songs is duality and listeners’ different takes on the same subject. When I hear this song, I hear melancholy alongside joy (served with a wink), so I tried to expand upon that. I took a minimalist, cut-up, and slow-tempo approach with my remix, but still tried to honor the joyful pop of Katy Perry’s version by pairing it with brightly colored visuals to tell a story with color.

The audio was remixed using Ableton Live, and the video was edited in Adobe Premiere Pro. It was then transferred to VHS tape. There were 4 copies made.

This piece was originally conceived as an art installation, which was exhibited January 8 – February 20, 2015 at the Mosesian Center for the Arts in Watertown, MA as part of the 30 Under 30 exhibition. The installation plays the VHS cassette on a loop on a white 13″ TV installed on a clear plexiglass pedestal set among fake hanging clouds.
